I'm raising it for My Royal

Motor Neurone Disease (also known as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis – ALS) is a devastating disease without an effective therapy where muscle weakness starts in one region and rapidly spreads to involve muscles of speech and swallow, upper and lower limbs with death from involvement of breathing muscles, usually within 2-3 years of diagnosis.

At RBWH there is a multi-disciplinary MND clinic that links with our MND research team that has four pillars with the overall aim of understanding the cause of MND through novel thinking and finding effective treatments.

These "pillars" are the metabolism/genetics/cognition and clinical trials with dedicated teams of researchers in all of these areas.

The RBWH research team led by A/Prof Robert Henderson and Prof Pamela McCombe has four research nurses (Susan Heggie, Kathryn Thorpe, Robyn Tuffley and Julieanne Wilson) along with a research fellow (2021- Dennis Yeow) and fundraising is essential to continue these critical positions. They are the nurses who help with biomarker collection, work closely with Shu & Derik in their metabolic projects and the critical personnel for clinical trials. If we raise enough money we would also like to employ part-time administration support!
